CNN predicts next Indonesian earthquake above M9
As you might know, Indonesia is prone to natural disasters and recently this month, Sumatra was the latest victim of a devastating M 6.9 earthquake.
I just checked my inbox and received a forwarded email (in Indonesian) about a prediction of another quake which will be larger than any previous quake and far more devastating. Further on the mail, I don’t know if this part is true or not but it said the news was not taken seriously by Indonesian Government so that it wouldn’t create a panic stiuation among the people.
If you crosscheck with a geologist point of view, in this case I refer to Rovicky (Indonesian blogger), I conclude that the prediction is not totally true because he said the earthquake could also happen in a series of “smaller” quakes rather than releasing one big earthquake. This matter remains uncertain although the Indonesian people should be heedful to this issue, because no one can predict the exact time of the future earthquakes.
Personally I think its quite scary. Do you have your own opinion?

I wonder if Jakarta will be able to survive a M9 quake. Does anybody know where i can find this information.

Hi Connor, M9 is quite large. If it happened in Sumatra, I guess Jakarta still can survive. I don’t have the information needed, sorry.

Hi guys,
I just found out that if an eathquake over M 8.2 hits Jakarta most bulidings, including the many ‘earthquake proof’ towers will be destroyed. Current building regulations state that earthquake proof buildings can withstand 8.2 as a max limit. Any seismic activity above that is sure to be devastating. Also, sometimes the aftershocks are more devastating than the principle shock, as the structures are already weakened. So the principle quake may have a magnetude of 7-8, this will cause severe structural damage to most buildings, then the aftershocks may potentially cause collapse. Im not trying to scare anybody, just passing on what ive found out (source of info: The University of London: Fundamentals of the Physical Environment)

What we need to find out, if possible, is the seismic wave type that will be produced if a M9 hits sumatura. If it will produce Surface waves (large wavelength, traverse), which carry the most energy, then Ill be very scared.
