As an Indonesian we are supposed to be mad when our neighbor Malaysia recently claims barongan (a similar dance to Reog Ponorogo) as an original dance from their country. Before that, the song Rasa Sayange was claimed also to be theirs, of course Indonesian people was furious, most of the people knows this song came for the eastern part of Indonesia. Not only that, Malaysia always stir troubles by claiming whats not theirs such as Batik, Angklung, Rendang.

I don’t really get it why they are always doing that? Has Malaysia run short of traditional culture? or they want to test our patience? or maybe they really want to steal whats “ours”.

The stereotype solution is that Malaysia and Indonesia comes from one culture root and problems like this should not be enlarged. Although its true we come from the same culture, its stupid to claim things that’s not original.

One thing, both of the country should be aware of the growth of foreign culture especially coming form the Western World. The richness of the local culture is at stake, where nowadays less people (in Indonesia) are interested in to local culture. I don’t know whats happening to my country, I think every day, a lot of people are losing their interest in local culture including me. For example, I don’t even teach my son my native language which is Sundanese.
