New Honda Scooter in Indonesia
This post is for people who are interested in motorcycles development in Indonesia. Data showed that, Scooter tipe motorcycles accounted for 18 percent of the country’s total motorcycle sales in 2007, increasing from 12 percent a year earlier, while moped motorcycles have dominated sales for long. As we know the usage of new scooters (the matics) is just like a new hype in Indonesia (although lots of people used Vespa scooters since early history of Indonesia).
Just in the previous weeks, people in Indonesia have seen the new advertising campaign by Honda Motorcycles Indonesia to launch their new scooter. By using a silhouette of the motorcycle on the TV and paper media ads, lots of people are then curious about PT Astra Honda Motor (the Indonesian motorcycle unit of Japan’s Honda Motor Co. Ltd) latest move.
The scooter leader in terms of market leading in Indonesia is currently Yamaha with their cheap and fast product, the Yamaha Mio. I guess Honda which gains most of the market share in motorcycle production and sales is really furious because their product the 125 cc Vario, have a significantly lower sales, maybe because of the higher price!
The price between Mio and Vario differs about 300 USD and it means a lot to Indonesian and that is maybe why Astra Honda Motor release the new scooter which is technically a downgrade of the Vario.
The product is called the Honda Beat, and is expected to become the main weapon to beat Yamaha in the country’s growing scooter market. With a price tag of 12 million rupiah (1,288 U.S. dollars), Honda Beat may help boost the share to at least 45 percent, Astra marketing director Johannes Loman told reporters here. The company now has greater focus on scooter, whose sales are rapidly growing in already crowded market, he said.
Now the problem is, will people really buy the product in Indonesia? Fuel price has just been risen and it cause a major damage in Indonesian economy (in my opinion).

I wish Honda would start releasing some of these great low price scooters in the US, it would really go a long way to helping the scooter revolution take off in America!
